UPDATE – ASSLLUK SCHOLORSHIP PROGRAMME FOR SRI LANKA LAW COLLEGE STUDENTS
By Mr Shanthi Senadheera

was in Sri Lanka during Christmas and New Year and was invited by the principal of the Sri Lanka Law College, Dr W.D.Rodrigo, to attend the 2011 Law College Awards Ceremony. The event was held at the Law College Main Hall on the 15th of December 2011 with the Chief Guest, Chief Justice Dr Shirani Bandaranayake, Attorney General Eva Wanasundara, Supreme Court Judge Mr Sriskandarajah , the Convener of our Trust, Mr Palitha Mathew, and several other distinguished guests drawn from the legal profession in Sri Lanka in attendance.

The following students were awarded scholarships from the Association of Sri Lankan Lawyers in the UK:

1. Mr K.G.G.I. Lakmal
2. Ms R.M.C.S. Bandara
3. Ms. P.G.U. Gallage
4. Ms. I.D.L.L.Dharmasiri
5. Ms. P.H.S Sanjeewani
6. Ms. P.E.Weerasekara
7. Mr.A.J.M Nawaz
8. Ms.A.Shahras
9. Ms.M.M.F.Minha
10. Ms.A.C.Nadheesha
11. Ms.W.D.D.D.Wickramasinghe
12. Mr.G.G.G.Chandralal
13. Mr G.D.N.Sumanaweera

The Association would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Leslie Ratnasekara, Mr Upali Jayathilake and other members who have been instrumental in making this project a success. Please find attached a detailed breakdown and additional information regarding the recipients of the scholarship. We kindly request your continued support in assisting the aspiring young lawyers of Sri Lanka through our Association.

On another note, several students who have completed the Legal Practice Course sent me requests to take up the issue of them not being awarded the same exemptions from the Sri Lanka Law College to be admitted to the Sri Lankan Bar. I personally met with the Principal of the Law College, Dr W.D.Rodrigo, and handed him a sample letter from one of the students accompanied by a letter from the Secretary of our Association (copy attached) highlighting the fact that the LPC course gives a law student the same level of skills in addition to the commercial skills required by an attorney working in Sri Lanka. Dr Rodrigo advised me that he was going to present our request to the Council For Legal Education and the Ministry of Justice at the next committee meeting. We are currently awaiting a response on this matter.
